Origins of KAWAI Pianos
Over the 90 years since our founding in 1927, we have evolved and challenged ourselves while keeping an eye on the origins of our piano making.
The origin of our piano making is nothing less than the grand philosophy of "wanting to create the world's best pianos," as expressed by our founder Koichi Kawai. "Each individual piano is built with great care and soul. The spirit of the company's founding, when Koichi devoted all his passion to the realization of his dream of making pianos, has been passed down through the years as the KAWAI Spirit.
The greatest achievement of this spirit is the Kawai Ryuyo Factory. Dubbed the "green workshop in the forest," this factory deliberately preserves those handmade processes that should be passed down to future generations as "original instrument processes.Work is done by skilled craftsmen who pursue the creation of pianos with care and attention to detail. At the same time, the Shigeru Kawai Piano Research Laboratory, equipped with the latest scientific measuring instruments, is conducting its own technical research that is not bound by preconceived notions.We are committed to taking an unbiased approach to everything we do, and we try to review every component and mechanism one by one, down to its material and shape.
In order to further evolve, we reconsider all conventional wisdom related to pianos. This is the unchanging norm at KAWAI, where we continue to take on technological challenges with our insatiable spirit of inquiry.
